How can Ducoya resin be processed?

Ducoya is typically shaped using pressing and sintering or hot compression moulding methods rather than extrusion or injection moulding. The first step is to place the polyimide powder into a mould of the desired shape.

The polyimide powder is first compressed under high pressure using the pressing and sintering method to form a compact shape. It is then subsequently heated (sintered) as part of a large batch of components at a temperature high enough to cause the particles to bond without detriment to the polymer, improving the final mechanical properties of the pressed shape.

Alternatively, hot compression moulding involves applying pressure to polyimide powder within a mould, which is subsequently heated under pressure until the material is fully cured.

The press forces required are considerably less for a given component size with hot compression moulding; therefore, the production rate is slower. Using commercially available automated powder presses allows the pressing and sintering method to produce circa 12-15 components per minute.

What flavour of polyimide is Ducoya G series?

If you are asking this question, you already know that polyimides are a very large family of interesting polymers. Ducoya G series is a co-polymer of PMDA and ODA (pyromellitic dianhydride and 4,4’-diaminodiphenyl ether). This family member is most notable for not exhibiting a detectable glass transition (Tg) or other phase transition over the temperature range -272°C to more than 600°C.
